Tea Party puppets march goose step to the tune of their base, and are trying to revive Ronald Reagan’s discredited “Voodoo Economics,” a tag hung on it by George H.W. Bush. But it’s a slur on Voodoo, a religion. A better tag would be Zombie Economics because it’s a dead idea walking. In October, 2008, when the U.S. economy went down like the Titanic, Alan Greenspan admitted he was in a “state of shocked disbelief.”
The economy is still deep under water, yet the Tea Party is trying to bring back Zombie Economics with fat cats pulling their strings. Zombie Economics has four parts: reduce government spending, lower taxes, ease regulations, and control the money supply. No one understands the last, but Alan Greenspan liked it, and he’s smart.
It’s also called “trickle-down” economics; money in the hands of fat cats will encourage them to expand businesses, hire people, and some will trickle down. But it only worked for the fat cats who poured avalanches of money on politicians, The billionaire Koch Brothers got the Tea Party going.
Republican message-masseurs dubbed every tax a “job-killing tax.” John Boehner mouthed it every chance he got in his snake-oil salesman’s voice, while the fat cats threw millions into ads putting Zombie Economics on a par with the Ten Commandments.
A lesser President would have given in to his base, chanced default, or used the 14th Amendment—the nuclear option—which would have transferred even more power to the presidency, which was “W’s” favorite trick. President Obama refused easy outs, and with the country held hostage, scraped out a deal. Now he can go back to saving the U.S.A. from greed-maddened string-pulling fat cats and their mendacious puppets. He needs support.
I think back to 1941 when headlines screamed with cries of Isolationists and Bundists against the U.S. entering “Europe’s war.” I’d turned 17 just before Pearl Harbor Day and recall my excitement because America would finally wake up and go to war. A year later I was in uniform.
Today, the same voices that screamed for Isolation now scream for Zombie Economics. We still have the greatest government in the world, but those tearing at its roots are modern-day Bundists, un-American and worse, anti-American. The country needs Obama now more than ever.
