The Watts Towers
The Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles became famous after a 5-day riot in August, 1965, 40 million dollars in damage, cars and property torched, stores broken into and looted, 3,000-plus arrested, 1,000-plus injured, 34 killed. Yet the most striking feature of Watts was not touched—the Watts Towers, today a National Historic Landmark.
If the Watts riots are remembered, it will be because they are part of the tale of creation of Watts Towers, the crystalized passion of Sabato Rodia. He died knowing that in his life, he made something unique and beautiful that will enrich lives of generations to come.
